There are a few things to consider before buying a server rack. With many brands, sizes and specific uses available, take your time to choose the best suited solution for your business.

One of the main things you have to consider before installing or buying a server rack is the cooling method you are using. In order to have a good air flow you need to choose a fully perforated server rack. In case you have liquid cooling you must get a sealed rack. For better cable management a server rack with channels is recommendable. The airflow space is also a factor to consider depending on the type of hardware you are installing.

Have a look at our extensive range of server racks and data cabinet products by visiting

PDU refers to power distribution unit, a power device, generally found in data centres. This device has multiple outputs and is used to supply electric power to electrical and networking devices. There are two types of power distribution units. These are high-cost floor mounted PDU and low-cost smaller PDUs. The second type of PDU is used widely and is called as Rack-based PDU, smart PDU, power strip etc. Smart PDU’s can be dumb or intelligent. By dumb, it means that you cannot manage them.
The major concern while choosing a PDU for a data centre is energy efficiency. Intelligent Rack PDUs are expensive and a balance needs to be maintained between the cost of PDU and energy costs. Inexpensive power units might distribute the power efficiently but will not control the energy flow. With the rise in energy costs, organizations are replacing traditional PDU’s to intelligent smart PDU’s to reach their energy management goals. You need to consider energy efficiency and costs while purchasing one.

Power Distribution Units PDUs are devices with multiple outputs that distribute electric power. A typical situation where is where networking equipments are positioned within a data centre. Power Distribution Units, PDU’s are usually placed in two major hardware power devices.

The first category encompasses higher cost floor-mounted power distribution devices. These types of devices convert large capacity raw power feeds to low capacity spread power feeds. They are normally made of transformers and circuit breakers. They may be comprised of monitoring controllers using protocols. Modbus also referred to as SNMP is an example of floor-mounted PDU.

The second category encompasses low cost power distribution devices. They are normally fitted with appliance outlets. They are used to distribute electric power contained by a rack. The PDUs in this group are normally called smart-PDU, intelligent-PDU or power strip. They distribute power to common outlets making it suitable for data centre. An application area could be in a mobile measurement station where numerous devices are to be supplied by a single distribution centre.

A server rack is a very essential component in any data centre as it is used to hold various electrical and networking components. These racks come in varied sizes. Some can be as tall as 9ft while others can be as short as a 4U Desktop rack. Generally, server racks are around 42U to 44U (1 U is almost 1.75” tall).
One of the most important things in a data centre is the rack space as many equipments need to be racked. If you are short of floor space in your data centre, you can go for tall server racks. By installing a tall server rack, you can rack more equipment without increasing the floor space. Say, if you opt for 55U tall server rack instead of 44U, you get almost 13U (which is equal to 22.75”) extra. In case you have 100 server racks in the centre, by replacing 44U by 55U, you can get an additional of 2275” of space

A server cabinet is great for any business with multiple servers to own. It will enable you to keep more floor space available, and for your servers to be stacked neatly on top of each other within the server cabinet. You could have multiple servers within one single server cabinet or rack, this enables you to keep all of your important data in one place. If you own a big business that has many servers you could label server cabinet so that you avoid confusion as to which server goes to where. These cabinets are an inexpensive way to save you time in case you need to get access to a specific server. You will not have to look around your floor at a bunch of different servers, all of them will be in one convenient cabinet. Buy a cabinet today from Comm Store and save yourself time and money in the future.
